COFFEE provides the average Briton with more HEALTHY antioxidants than
fruit
and veg, a new study reveals.
The drink is the biggest source of the molecules which help protect
against
cancer and heart disease.
Next is black tea, followed by bananas, dry beans and corn. In the study,
American scientists measured antioxidants in more than 100 foods and
drinks - then looked at how often people ate and drank them.
Chief researcher Professor Joe Vinson said: "Americans get more
antioxidants
from coffee than any dietary source. Nothing comes close."
He said his findings would almost certainly apply to Britain - where
70million cups of coffee are drunk each day, despite concerns over the BAD
effects too much caffeine can have.
Around 47 per cent of Brits drink coffee daily, compared with over 50 per
cent in the US.
Prof Vinson, of Scranton University, Pennsylvania, said caffeinated and
decaffeinated coffee had similar antioxidant levels.
But he urged people to stick to one or two cups a day - and to KEEP eating
fruit and vegetables.
