I was a kid then :-)  The customary thing is beer and aquavit.
Now, lutefisk/lutfisk properly processed is quite edible and yields a firm

white fish with a faintly different taste.  On the other side, poorly made

you get a ****vering jelly of a long dead fish (and some like it that way 
I've heard...:-)
